Vernon François just made a big leap. Serena Williams, Amandla Stenberg, and Lupita Nyong’o’s hairstylist has moved his popular hair-care line from Sephora and Net-a-Porter to Sally Beauty. As of today, Vernon François (the line, not the man) is exclusively available in Sally stores and on its site.
It’s a smart move for the retailer as it works to expand its hair-care offerings for those with textured, natural hair. It’s also exciting for the British hairstylist as he’s hoping to get his products into even more hands and continue to spread his message that beauty is also for those with kinks, coils, and curls. “Sally Beauty was one of the first beauty retailers I ever ventured into as a young teenager in London,” François tells Allure. “I try to imagine telling my 15-year-old self that my products would be available all over the United States at some stage.”
He notes that Sally Beauty is in many towns and cities across the country and where millions of people go to grab both hair-color and styling products. This partnership allows him to reach more people, many of whom he talks to already on social media. “The most fulfilling part of having my own hair product is the feedback that I get on Instagram or via my website from people who use the product,” he says. “Some have shared deeply personal and emotional stories about what it means to them to have a collection designed to embrace their hair texture versus suppressing it.”
This is something François speaks about a lot on his Instagram — changing the conversation so those with kinky and curly strands stop talking negatively about their hair. His products work with your natural hair texture instead of fighting or “taming” it. It’s not just for tight curls, though. My hair is wavy and frizzy, and I’m a huge fan of the Whipped Deep Conditioner and Mist Nourishing Water.
“It’s an incredible position to find myself in that people choose to share their hair journeys and traumas with me and I take that very seriously,” says François. “Especially when parents email me telling me that their teenagers are bullied for their kinks and coils but that they’ve found my products and the message behind the range and it has an impact on their family.”
If you’re already using François’s products, you’ll still be able to get the same ones at Sally as well as new launches. And if you’re anything like me and you love a sale, hair products are discounted at the retailer all the time. While the Styling Cream (another favorite) and Pure Fro Shampoo are regular price, items like the Pure Fro Conditioner and Leave-In Conditioner are buy-one, get-one half-off right now. It’s a win-win if I ever saw one.
