Golden Globes 2020: Nicole Kidman’s Sleek, Affordable Blowout — Expert Tips
Sometimes you see a hairstyle on a red carpet and immediately get that instinctual itch to try it yourself at home. Depending on what celebrities you iconize, attempting their hairstyles without professional help can become a bit of a task, though. Lucky for us mere peasants, however, there are plenty of hairstylists in the industry who stick to the classics (and use products we can actually afford to do so). Nicole Kidman‘s look from the 2020 Golden Globes is a prime example. The Big Little Lies actress appeared at the award ceremony in a flaming-red gown and a sleek, center-parted blowout from hairstylist Kylee Heath. And, as Heath tells Allure, the look is much easier to execute and more affordable than it appears at first glance.
Heath created the “modern” style to complement Kidman’s “classic” dress, and did so entirely with Tressemmeé products. Most of Kylee’s work went into prepping Kidman’s hair while damp. “I am all about prepping the hair,” she says. “Since we were going for a sleek look, it was important to prep it with products that would help make it last through the night.”
Those products, because we know you’re curious, are Pro Pure Volume Invisible Styler and Keratin Smooth Heat Protectant Spray. It’s those two things, she says, the prevent her from having to do any touch-ups later.
To disperse the product evenly, Heath then combed through the hair and also used the comb to create a distinct part running all the way down the center of Kidman’s head. “I blew the hair out, starting in the front,” Heath explains. “I worked a little volume into the roots with a round brush, and once the hair was dry I smoothed it out section by section with a straightener.”
She puts major emphasis on using small sections to make sure every strand is pin-straight and perfect. The rest was easy as pie: Heath applied Dry Texture Finishing Spray to the roots and gave a little tease before tucking Kidman’s hair behind her ears and smoothed out her flyaways using Compressed Micro Mist Hold Level 3: Boost Hair Spray. Oh, and one last thing for good measure: a quick spritz of Dry Oil Spray.
Heath’s award-show arsenal included five staple products, and not a single one cost more than…$6. So tomorrow when you wake up feeling inspired to do something with your hair, keep in mind that not all hairstyles are as complicated or as high-maintenance as they seem. Kidman’s just proven it.
